Pertanyaan akan pertanggungjawaban keotentikan Islam sebagai agama baru, yang lahir pada kurun abad ke-7 masehi, barangkali menjadi pertanyaan yang ganjil bagi kaum Muslim sendiri. Sebagaimana pemeluk agama lain terhadap agama mereka sendiri, umat Islam pun tak luput dari cara pandang yang secara perspektif lebih “ in ward looking ”, melihat segala sesuatu atas dasar pertimbangan dan cakrawala keyakinan hal-hal yang sudah mapan di dalam dirinya sendiri. Sehingga tidak mengherankan, manakala ada pihak yang berasal dari alur tradisi lain yang mencoba meruyak ke batas terjauh dasar pertimbangan dan keyakinan hal-hal yang dianggap sudah mapan itu, dianggap sebagai upaya terselubung sebentuk “penjajahan”, dan bukan upaya yang dilakukan berdasarkan atas pertimbangan ilmiah. Secara umum terdapat tiga kelompok sikap keberagamaan Islam di Indonesia. Pertama, mereka yang menjadikan Islam sebagai ajaran dan doktrin yang universal; yang mengatasi sejarah; yang tetap; dan yang self-sufficient ; sehingga tidak diperlukan lagi sebuah pembaharuan. Islam bagi kelompok ini sudah menjawab semua persoalan keduniaan--apalagi persoalan akhirat, sebagaimana termuat pada kata perkata Al-Qur’an dan Sunnah Nabi yang dapat dipercaya keasliannya ( Hadits As-Shahihah ). Kemunduran Islam bagi kelompok ini, lebih disebabkan karena umat Islam sudah menyimpang dari teks-teks kitab sucinya. Pembaharuan Islam di Indonesia: Meneropong Sosok Ahmad Wahib

Abstract This article explores Ahmad Wahib’s ideas on Islamic renewal in Indonesia. He was a Javanese (Indonesian) Muslim reformer that was hard trying to change Indonesian Muslim society with his full integrity and uniqueness, whereas Islamic renewal in Indonesia was an elite circumstances. It was easiest thing for Indonesian Islamic reformer to pursue modernity, as people in Western world (Christianity) did. However, Islamic renewal increasingly became complicated in the Muslim world. Even in Indonesia, there was an afraid to do it since it may could be judged as discrediting Islam. The locus of discourse in the Islamic renewal must be obey and in line with the unity and oneness of Islamic society ( ummah ) as a collective necessity. Ahmad Wahib’s Renewal Islamic Thinking in Indonesia

Generally, there are three groups of Islamic thinking in Indonesia. The First, they who render Islam should be as doctrine applied universally; meta-historic; definitive; and self-sufficient. Hence, they do not need Islamic renewal. Islam was gave answers for all of problem questions of life in worldly even in hereafter, which was described by The Koran and Sunna those has dependable (Hadith As-Shahiha). The declining of Islam—for those who belong to this point of view—is due to distortion of applying Holy Koran. Therefore, discerning The Holy Koran comprehensively and reading textually-literally, as well as applying it without reserve, is the answer for better future for Islamic society.
